Imagine the surprise and delight when Grover Cleveland flipped the switch on the first Christmas tree adorned with twinkle lights at the White House back in 1895. It was a huge affair, a giant tree had only 100 custom made Christmas lights, in multi colored strings, with 8 Xmas lights per string. After that, Americans went bananas for holiday lights.

Slowly and steadily cities around the country began featuring trees with electric Christmas lights, and after the 1950s people around the nation started decorating their homes outside and in with strings of holiday lights. Of course, lights in the early days were in many days quite different than the Christmas lights we have today. Colors and styles were very limited, and now you can find twinkle lights of nearly any color, and in strings of multi colors.
